Doch selbst ihre jüngste Tochter wusste lange Zeit nicht, dass ihre Mutter eine sephardische Jüdin aus Thessaloniki war und Rachel Serero hieß. In einer arrangierten Ehe lebend, strebte Chelly Wilson schon früh nach Freiheit und Autonomie und konnte gerade noch rechtzeitig in die USA fliehen.
Die Dokumentation erlaubt Einblicke in eine komplexe Familiengeschichte und die faszinierende Subkultur im New Yorker Viertel The Deuce der 1960er bis 70er Jahre.
Chelly Wilson was a successful businesswoman, loved men and women, played poker with porn stars and mafiosi, and in the 1960s built herself an empire of porn movie theaters in Manhattan – for all the challenges. People say she had a short fuse and was resolute, but charming and generous. Yet even her youngest daughter did not know for many years that her mother was a Sephardic Jew from Thessaloniki called Rachel Serero. Living in an arranged marriage, from an early date Chelly Wilson sought freedom and independence – and managed to escape to the USA just in time.
The documentary gives an insight into a complex family history and the fascinating subculture in New York’s The Deuce neighborhood in the 1960s and 1970s.
