Leiba und seine Frau Sura leben mit ihrem Sohn Eli in einem Dorf in Rumänien – die Landschaft wie gemalt. Die Familie besitzt den Gasthof im Ort, der Treffpunkt für Reisende und die Dorfbewohner*innen gleichermaßen ist. Es ist das ausgehende 19. Jahrhundert und auf den ersten Blick sind alle, die hier leben und vorbeikommen, gleich. Doch in Gesprächen blitzen Vorurteile und Neid auf. Als Antisemitismus sich Bahn bricht, schmieden Leiba und Sura noch immer Pläne, streiten und lachen wie in den Jahren zuvor. Doch zwischen jüdischem Pessach- und christlichem Osterfest kündigt sich ein Konflikt an.
Leiba and his wife Sura live with their son Eli in a village in Romania – in truly picturesque countryside. The family owns the local inn, a meeting place for travelers and the village inhabitants alike. It is the close of the 19th century, and at first sight all those who live here or pass through seem to be equals. However, when people talk, prejudice and envy can be discerned in the odd remark they make. When anti-Semitism takes hold of life, Leiba and Sura are still making plans, arguing, and laughing as in the years before – but a conflict bodes ill between the Jewish Passover and Christian Easter festivals.
