Set against the backdrop of the terrorist attacks of October 7, 2023, and allegations that some UNRWA staff members were involved in kidnappings, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) found itself in one of its most severe crises. While many donor countries temporarily suspended payments only to resume them later, support from the United States — formerly the organization’s largest donor — has stopped entirely. At the same time, the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip has deteriorated, while Israel has taken political and legal steps to sever ties with the organization.
The documentary traces the 75-year history of UNRWA — from its founding as a temporary relief agency for Palestinian refugees after the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, to its central — yet controversial — role in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. With new insights and exclusive access, the film sheds light on the work of the only UN agency dedicated exclusively to helping a specific group of refugees. As its mandate is set to expire at the end of 2025, a crucial question remains: Will the UN General Assembly extend UNRWA’s mission, and what will the organization’s future be in a region marked by war, displacement, and political deadlock?
Afterward, Laura Cazés will speak with director Duki Dror.
