At Auschwitz in early 1943, hundreds of Jewish women were interned in Block 10 and routinely subjected to medical experiments involving forced sterilization. Nazi doctors performed the most painful sterilization methods on them, and prisoner doctors were forced to assist. When Jewish gynecologist Dr. Maximilian Samuel refuses to participate in the brutal experiments, the Nazis threaten to gas his 20-year-old daughter. Caught in this moral dilemma, he tries to find his own way forward.
The film BLOCK 10 draws on records from witnesses, firsthand accounts, and court transcripts. The entire story unfolds in a single location — a confined space where the perspectives of victims, perpetrators, and prisoner functionaries must exist side by side. These spatial constraints give an even greater sense of reality to the moral conflicts, power structures, and interdependencies inherent in those relationships.
Afterward, author Alice Brauner, director Marcus O. Rosenmüller and actor Christian Berkel will speak with Verena Lueken (journalist, film critic and author).
An awareness team from OFEK e.V. will be available should you wish to talk or need support after the film.
